Mountain View Baptist

„With a history spanning back generations to 1908, Mountain View Baptist Church is the heart and soul of the Newtown community.  This historic church is the most recognizable structure in the community, but it is more than a building. Its members and leadership team are driving the efforts to revitalize and create a new future for Newtown.

The Newtown Community

Newtown is part of the Southernside neighborhood in Greenville, South Carolina,. This is a historically Black community that is bounded by the Reedy River, Bramlett Road and the Swamp Rabbit Trail. More than 400 families lived in the community in its peak, but those numbers have dwindled over the decades. The community is ready to grow again.

The Parish House CDC

The Parish House CDC is a concept long in the making. For more than two decades, Mountain View Baptist Church purchased vacant properties in Newtown in order to one day restore housing and businesses here.  During the Covid-19 pandemic, when the church held its services and gathering outside, the concept of the Parish House fully took shape. The idea that the church could build people and building community coalesced.  Now, this is the group that will lead Newtown into the future.
